SUMMARY:Life of the River 2021: Tahquamenon Logging Museum\, Newberry\, MI
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the Life of the River!\nSt. Marys and Tahquamenon River\nJuly – September\, 3 unique events \n\nJuly 28\, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. – Monocle Lake Day Use Area\, Bay Mills\, MI\nAugust 25\, 1 – 5 p.m.  – Tahquamenon Logging Museum\, Newberry\, MI\nSeptember 11\, 1 – 5 p.m. – Tahquamenon River Mouth\, Paradise\, MI\n\nEvent recommended for families with children age 8-13. Parents/Guardian and siblings encouraged to attend as well. Children under 8 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian during all activities. This event is free to 4-H members and their families! \nLimited space for each day’s event. When registering\, please only select the days you plan to attend. \nGeneral Schedule:\n30 minutes – orientation to the day\n1-hour – Educational activity 1 (group 1)\nEducational activity 2 (group 2)\n1-hour  –  Snack and group activity time\n1-hour – Educational activity 1 (group 2)\nEducational activity 2 (group 1) \nParents or guardians are responsible for providing transportation for drop off\, pick up. Parents and families are strongly encouraged to participate along with the youth during the event\, although it is not required. \nAll children participating between the ages of 5-19 must be registered 4-H members. SUMMARY:Lake Sturgeon Release\, Saginaw Bay Watershed
DESCRIPTION:More sturgeon to be released into Saginaw Bay Watershed during public events on Aug. 20\nLocal\, state\, and federal partners invite the public to a Lake sturgeon release celebration on Aug. 20\, 2021\, in the Saginaw Bay Watershed. Releases will reintroduce +100 hatchery-raised sturgeon into each tributary of the Saginaw Bay Watershed (Cass\, Flint\, Shiawassee\, and Tittabawassee rivers). Short presentations may be made at three of the events by local partners. \nThe schedule includes: \n\nThe noon Shiawassee River release will take place at Cole Park in Chesaning\, MI\, and will be hosted by the Friends of the Shiawassee River. For more information\, contact Sarah Baker at sbaker@shiawasseeriver.org. \nThe 2 p.m. Cass River release is at the parking lot at Rosstal Street and Gunzenhausen Street in Frankenmuth\, MI\, and will be hosted by the City of Frankenmuth. For more information\, contact Sarah Scheitler at sscheitler@flintriver.org.\n\nLake sturgeon are a unique Great Lakes species. They can grow up to 7 feet long and can weigh up to 300 pounds. The slow-maturing fish do not begin reproducing until they are 15-20 years old. Once abundant in many Michigan lakes and rivers\, lake sturgeon were nearly eradicated due to overfishing and habitat loss\, particularly the destruction of rocky reefs in rivers that sturgeon and other native fish species use for spawning. In recent years\, many partnerships and projects are working to restore sturgeon to a self-sustaining level in Michigan. Come with us as we travel aboard the Inland Seas’ vessel to uncover the wealth of culture and heritage that Lake Superior has to offer. \nThis program is open to all. Preference will be given to tribal members enrolled in college/university. Parents/Guardian and siblings encouraged to attend as well. Children under 8 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian during all activities. This event is free to 4-H members and their families! \nLimited space for each day’s event. When registering\, please only select the days you plan to attend. \nGeneral Schedule:\n30 minutes – orientation to the day\n1-hour – Educational activity 1 (group 1)\nEducational activity 2 (group 2)\n1-hour  –  Snack and group activity time\n1-hour – Educational activity 1 (group 2)\nEducational activity 2 (group 1) \nParents or guardians are responsible for providing transportation for drop off\, pick up. DESCRIPTION:This panel highlights Michigan Sea Grant’s work for development and implementation of educational programs as well as communicating evidence-based science to interested citizens. \nSpeakers\nMary Bohling  \nMary is a Michigan Sea Grant Extension educator who works with coastal communities and businesses in the Detroit area\, applying science-based knowledge to address Great Lakes issues. Her areas of expertise and programming include fisheries management\, economic development\, habitat restoration\, coastal tourism initiatives\, and greenway/water trail development. \nBrandon Schroeder  \nBrandon serves as a Michigan Sea Grant Extension educator in northeast Michigan. His areas of expertise and programming include fisheries science and management\, sustainable coastal tourism development\, biodiversity conservation\, and Great Lakes literacy education. \nCindy Hudson  \nCindy is Michigan Sea Grant’s Extension Program communications manager\, where she works with Extension educators to help promote their work\, events\, and activities. SUMMARY:Tapping into Education and Outreach Resources: Great Lakes Partnerships and Initiatives
DESCRIPTION:This panel explores Great Lakes outreach programs dedicated to both formal and informal education initiatives and how to connect research to schools and the broader public. \nErin Johnston\nErin is the wildlife biologist for the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) Natural Resources Department.  As the wildlife program lead\, Erin oversees a number of projects and surveys related to bats\, waterfowl\, herptafauna\, wolves\, and more recently wetland communities on the L’Anse Reservation. \nLloyd Wescoat\nLloyd is the K-12 Education Program Assistant at the MTU Center for Science and Environmental Outreach\, working with the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative and the Western U.P. MiSTEM Network. Ms. Wescoat has assisted in providing educational opportunities and support for stewardship projects and to expand STEM opportunities in Western U.P. school districts. \nMeaghan Gass\nMeaghan is Michigan Sea Grant’s Extension educator for the Saginaw Bay region\, where she works with coastal communities and partners to apply science-based knowledge to enhance the sustainable use of the Great Lakes.
