DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss this free family friendly environmental event in southeast Michigan!\n\nLooking for something fun to do with the family in southeast Michigan? Join hundreds of people at Shiver on the River Feb. 1\, 2020\, on Belle Isle in Detroit. \nParticipants can explore the many different venues on the island and learn about exciting environmental happenings on the Detroit River and beyond. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.\, more than a dozen organizations\, including Friends of the Detroit River\, Michigan Sea Grant\, and the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge will have informational booths to visit and kids activities at the Casino Building (indoors!). SUMMARY:2020 Ludington Regional Fisheries Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open for the 2020 Ludington Regional Fishery Workshop. The workshop will include presentations from biologists\, educators\, and fishery managers with Michigan DNR\, NOAA/GLERL\, MSU and Michigan Sea Grant. Topics will include salmon and trout diets\, the impact of quagga mussels on Lake Michigan\, and water level expectations for 2020 in addition to updates on stocking levels and other fishery management issues. \nThis year’s workshop will focus on a new project that seeks to update the Predator-Prey Ratio for Lake Michigan by including the most recent data available on fish diets\, lake trout population dynamics\, and the influx of Chinook salmon from Lake Huron. This project will use structured decision making (SDM) to address all salmon and trout species and include a stakeholder process. The Ludington workshop will be a great opportunity to learn more about the process and how your organization can take an active role. \nThere will also be an opportunity to address frequently asked questions on alewife abundance\, monitoring\, and modelling. SUMMARY:AFDO/Seafood Alliance HACCP Training Course
DESCRIPTION:A Seafood Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) Training Course that is being coordinated by Michigan Sea Grant and the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission will be held December 10-12\, 2019 at Ojibwa Casino in Baraga\, Michigan. All fish processors are required to take this training if they are not currently certified. \nHazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) consists of identifying safety hazards\, determining where they occur\, monitoring these points and recording the results. HACCP involves day-to-day monitoring of critical control points by production employees. The Seafood HACCP regulation that is enforced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is based on the belief that commercial fish processors can understand the food safety hazards of their products and take reasonable steps to control them. Commercial fish processors are required either to obtain formal training for one or more of their own employees or to hire trained independent contractors to perform the HACCP functions. \nThe HACCP regulation requires processors to keep extensive records of processing and sanitation at their facilities. \nSince implementation of Seafood HACCP in the U.S. seafood has become the safest and healthiest form of muscle protein consumed in the world. Fish attributed illness outbreaks have continued to drop by year. For instance\, from 1998 to 2004 there were an average of 65 recorded illnesses per year according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. From 2005 to 2012 there was an average of 32 illnesses per year. \nAt times\, questions arise as to whether someone needs training in Seafood HACCP. The Seafood HACCP regulation defines processing as handling\, storing\, preparing\, heading\, eviscerating\, shucking\, freezing\, changing into different market forms\, manufacturing\, preserving\, packing\, labeling\, dockside unloading\, or holding fish or fishery products. The regulation does not apply to the harvest or transport of fishery products. It also does not apply to practices such as heading\, eviscerating or freezing intended solely to prepare fish for holding on a harvest vessel. Retail establishments are also exempt from the Seafood HACCP regulation. \nFish processors who complete the course put themselves at a competitive advantage as they can then produce value added products such as smoked fish and caviar. SUMMARY:8th Biennial State of the Strait conference: Status and Trends of Ecosystem Health Indicators
DESCRIPTION:The State of the Strait is a unique binational (Canada-United States) collaboration that hosts a conference every two years that brings together government managers\, researchers\, students\, environmental and conservation organizations\, and concerned citizens. Participants work to understand historical ecosystem conditions and assess current ecosystem status in order to achieve a better future for the Detroit River and western Lake Erie. \nMichigan Sea Grant is one of several groups sponsoring the 2019 State of the State Conference on November 19\, 2019 in Windsor\, Ontario. SUMMARY:2020 Aquaculture Challenge
DESCRIPTION:The Aquaculture Challenge is a competition held by Lake Superior State University. Local school teams are tasked with creating their own small-scale aquaponics system. In addition to creating the system\, each team is provided an Arduino microcontroller and sensors to monitor the parameters of the system\, such as air and water temperature\, luminosity\, and soil moisture. The last component of the system is a business canvas that will outline potential customers\, methods of distribution\, and other points to consider when creating a business. Each of these three sections of the challenge are important when starting and operating a full-scale aquaculture business\, and many of these businesses fail because they did not consider one or more of these components. \nThe Challenge gives the students a few months to conceptualize and implement their system design\, configure their Arduinos and sensors to monitor their system\, and create their business model canvas. The students were asked to submit videos describing their systems\, and they where they were judged in each of these three categories separately\, as well as overall integration of them. The videos will be posted here\, so stay tuned to witness the ingenious systems created by these brilliant students! \nRegistration runs from October 25–January 8. DESCRIPTION:Michigan Sea Grant’s internship program sponsors undergraduate students to work on specific research questions or projects with Michigan colleges\, universities\, and community-based environmental organizations.  \nOur summer interns have been working around the state on fascinating projects related to Great Lakes stewardship. They’ve been using drones to monitor coastal erosion\, planting rain gardens in urban watersheds\, and more.  \nJoin us on the morning of August 2 for presentations\, posters\, and refreshments.
