SUMMARY:Lake Sturgeon Community Release Celebrations: Saginaw Bay region
DESCRIPTION:On September 20\, 2025\, community members and conservation partners are invited to help release young lake sturgeon into the Saginaw Bay watershed. Attendees at these free riverside release events will reintroduce more than 100 native sturgeon into each tributary of the Saginaw River system (e.g.\, Cass\, Flint\, Shiawassee\, and Tittabawassee rivers).\n\nPublic release celebrations on Sept. 20 across the Saginaw Bay Watershed include:\n\n\n11 a.m.\, Tittabawassee River\, at the Bob G. Caldwell Municipal Boat Launch in Midland\, hosted by the Chippewa Nature Center. For more information\, contact Jennifer Kirts at jkirts@chippewanaturecenter.org.\n\n\nNoon\, Shiawassee River\, at Cole Park in Chesaning\, hosted by the Friends of the Shiawassee River. For more information\, contact Liz Roxberry at info@shiawasseeriver.org.\n\n\n2 p.m.\, Flint River\, at Paddlers’ Landings (Mott Park Recreation Area) in Flint\, hosted by the Flint River Watershed Coalition. For more information\, contact Emily Stetson at estetson@gcparks.org.\n\n\n2:30 p.m.\, Cass River\, at the parking lot at the Gunzenhausen Walkway in Frankenmuth\, hosted by the City of Frankenmuth. For more information\, contact Matt Bierlein at mbierlein@frankenmuthcity.com.\n\n\nLake sturgeon are a unique Great Lakes species. They can grow up to 7 feet long and can weigh up to 300 pounds. The slow-maturing fish do not begin reproducing until they are 15-20 years old. Once abundant in many Michigan lakes and rivers – including the Saginaw River System – lake sturgeon were nearly eradicated due to overfishing and habitat loss\, particularly the destruction of rocky reefs in rivers that sturgeon and other native fish species use for spawning. Many partnerships and projects are working to restore sturgeon to a self-sustaining level in Michigan. This work includes restoring sturgeon habitat\, reintroducing sturgeon into their native ranges\, and raising awareness and appreciation.\n\nMany partners have been working since 2017 to bring sturgeon back to the Saginaw River system. Thus far\, community members and partners have released close to 7\,000 sturgeon into local waters. Partners that support the September 20\, 2025 sturgeon release events\, including Bay County\, City of Frankenmuth\, Chippewa Nature Center\, Flint River Watershed Coalition\, Friends of the Shiawassee River\, Michigan Department of Natural Resources\, Michigan Sea Grant\, MSU Department of Fisheries and Wildlife\, MSU Extension\, Saginaw Bay Watershed Initiative Network\, Sturgeon for Tomorrow – Black Lake Chapter\, The Conservation Fund\, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\, and more. Learn more about the lake sturgeon restoration efforts and get involved here.\n\nIf you have general release event questions\, please contact:\n\n\nMeaghan Gass\, Michigan Sea Grant Extension Educator\, gassmeag@msu.edu\, (989) 895-4026 ext. 5 \n\n\nMike Kelly\, The Conservation Fund\, Great Lakes Office\, Director\, kellym@conservationfund.org\, 989-892-9171

Attendees at these free riverside release events will reintroduce more than 100 native sturgeon into each tributary of the Saginaw River system (e.g.\, Cass\, Flint\, Shiawassee\, and Tittabawassee rivers).\n\nThe juvenile sturgeon being released in August come from the Black River in Cheboygan County. They hatched in the river as a result of natural reproduction. In late May 2025\, researchers from the Michigan State University Department of Fisheries & Wildlife and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources moved the fish to the Black Lake Streamside Rearing Facility for safekeeping. The young fish spent the summer growing to 4-6 inches in length before their release into the Saginaw River system.\nPublic release celebrations on Aug. 22 across the Saginaw Bay Watershed include:\n\n\n11 a.m.\, Tittabawassee River\, at the Bob G. Caldwell Municipal Boat Launch in Midland\, hosted by the Chippewa Nature Center. SUMMARY:Mi Fresh Fish Sail on Friday\, July 18!
DESCRIPTION:Sail at 8:30am-1pm – Come aboard the Inland Seas tall ship schooner! Sail Lake Superior and experience Mi Fresh Fish through traditional stories and fish identification activities. Registration is $20 per person. The boat will launch from 58 Huron Street in Houghton. Remember your water bottle\, hat\, and sunscreen to make sure everyone has a safe and comfortable sailing experience. \nFry at 4-7pm: After you learn about the health benefits of local fish\, join the Mi Fresh Fish Fry on the pier! The fun happens port-side at Huron Street Waterfront Park at 4-7pm. The Mi Fresh Fish Fry is free and open to the public with food\, cooking lessons\, fishing activities\, and more for the whole family. \nWhat is Mi Fresh Fish? \nMi Fresh Fish uplifts all fish produced in Michigan. This includes fish produced from farmed and wild harvests for food\, bait\, stocking\, fee-fishing\, or ornamental products. The goal is to educate and bring awareness to Michiganders that there are many values to our local fisheries; and that aquaculture\, commercial fishing\, and seafood processing industries exist in Michigan and that they are not just businesses\, but also our neighbors. If you would like to learn more\, dive in and visit Mi Fresh Fish online.

The database also includes facultative wetland plants in its target species.  This virtual review is a new part of our external review process intended to ensure the best quality science-based information is provided to our audiences.  This current cycle includes updates to species already listed in GLANSIS\, candidates for delisting\, and new species proposed to be added to the system. This open comment period will include a very brief overview of each species and discussion by assigned expert reviewers.  Opportunity will be provided for participants to provide comments/feedback.  The meeting will be recorded and the chat log will also be used to take notes. \nHow: \nJust join the zoom meeting during the appropriate time-block for your species of interest.  Species within each block are listed alphabetically – NOT necessarily the order in which they will individually be discussed. \nThose wishing to receive advance copies of the draft assessments and profiles please contact rochelle.sturtevant@noaa.gov. Time during the meeting is somewhat limited – if you have extensive comments or data sets for particular species\, please provide those via email (rochelle.sturtevant@noaa.gov). Likewise\, comments are welcome from those unable to attend the meeting. \n\n\nAGENDA
