SUMMARY:30th Annual Great Lakes Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Great Lakes: Tackling Challenges Today and Beyond\n\nThis Great Lakes conference is offered each year during Michigan State University’s Agriculture and Natural Resources Week to focus on the current and emerging issues\, research\, and other information related to the Great Lakes and the surrounding watershed. This year’s 30th annual conference will feature presentations on legislative developments with ballast water and invasive species\, fish diseases and their impacts on the Great Lakes\, reclaiming Detroit’s industrial waterfront\, forecasting harmful algal blooms (HABs)\, a sneak preview of a new PBS production on HABs\, and more. \nIt is sponsored by Michigan State University’s Department of Fisheries and Wildlife\, Institute of Water Research\, Michigan Sea Grant\, MSU Extension and the Water Resources Division\, Department of Environment\, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) with support from the USGS Water Resources Research Program. Sponsored by Detroit Public TV’s Great Lakes Now and the University of Michigan Great Lakes Theme Semester\, the #LakeEffects series will feature fascinating documentary films\, short videos\, and Q&A sessions with subject matter experts. \nOn March 12\, join us for the first night\, focusing on the theme of “JOURNEYS.” Featured films include The Big Five Dive and Crossing Lake Huron. The films will be followed by a Q&A panel with several of the women featured in the first film\, including Michigan Sea Grant Extension Educator Meaghan Gass! \nTo make sure you can stay healthy while enjoying fabulous Great Lakes documentaries and short films\, all sessions of the #LakeEffects Film Series will now be streamed online ONLY! All films will now be livestreamed over Zoom\, starting at 7pm. Our guest speakers will be joining remotely as well\, so you’ll still get the full film series experience — with your own bowl of popcorn in the comfort of your home or office. \nWhile the on-campus screenings have been canceled\, it’s easy to join remotely.
