Michigan Sea Grant coordinates a binational fellowship with the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network (GLSGN), the Great Lakes Commission (GLC), and the International Joint Commission’s Great Lakes Regional Office (IJC-GLRO). Working with mentors from Michigan and Ohio Sea Grants, the GLC, and the IJC, Great Lakes Fellows work to help ensure plans for the region reflect and support the needs of underrepresented groups and Indigenous communities from around the Great Lakes. In addition, the fellows are supporting the Participatory Science Plan (PDF) by outlining the next phase of a Great Lakes Participatory Science Guidebook and Community of Practice Hub.

The Great Lakes Fellowship application window is open through June 20, 2026.

This one-year fellowship will help shape how community science is done in the Great Lakes, including by creating a guidance tool for best practices on how to do community science; and building a community of practice to connect existing communities and bring in new efforts. As a binational fellowship, they will also help strengthen the science, policy and management programs of governments of both Canada and the United States. This fellowship provides support for a student’s efforts and enhances academic and professional development opportunities.

Students must be enrolled in or recently graduated from a full-time graduate or professional degree program at an accredited academic institution in the Great Lakes region. Students may be working toward a degree in any discipline related to Great Lakes coastal or ecosystem issues.
