Facing a backlog of species profile reviews, the Great Lakes Aquatic Nonindigenous Species Information System (GLANSIS) database team created an effective new review process that has increased participation from external experts and led to improved quality and efficiency.

The GLANSIS database, managed jointly by NOAA and Michigan Sea Grant, provides information about the region’s current and potential aquatic invasive species (AIS). Species profiles in the database are routinely reviewed to capture changes in range, impact, and current ecological knowledge or management. Changes to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) review requirements and the addition of many new species since the review cycle was originally developed had created a serious backlog in profiles needing attention.

GLANSIS staff devised, piloted, refined, and implemented a new system for reviewing species profiles that meets and exceeds NOAA and USGS agency review requirements. The new system, nicknamed a “Grand Review,” involves sending batches of species profiles to external reviewers, instead of each species being handled individually. In addition to providing written feedback, reviewers are invited to a set of virtual, informal panels to discuss their comments and compare notes with other experts. Formal reviewers are eligible for honoraria. Virtual panels are open to the public and advertised in key scientific forums, frequently drawing additional expertise.

After implementing the Grand Review system, GLANSIS staff have seen an increasing willingness from expert reviewers to participate and share personal insights into the species being discussed. The new process also opens doors for more state aquatic invasive species managers to participate in the open comment review. The updated process has already resulted in major progress against the profile review backlog, stronger end products, and increased engagement from reviewers.
