A recent issue of Site Selection magazine highlights Michigan Sea Grant’s role in the state’s thriving blue economy.
“The Great Lakes are the beating heart of our region and are among the world’s 15 largest lakes,” said Dr. Silvia Santa Maria Newell, Michigan Sea Grant director and University of Michigan professor for environment and sustainability, in the November 2025 article. “They support a $5 billion fishery, a $19 billion shipping industry, millions in coastal tourism and more — all of which form a significant part of the basis of our regional economy.”
Site Selection is a leading publication in corporate real estate, facility planning, location analysis, and foreign direct investment. Investment interest in Michigan is growing, thanks to the state’s international borders, vibrant tourism industry, comfortable climate, and access to fresh water. The new article showcases Michigan Sea Grant’s role in sustaining and growing the regional economy through habitat restoration, workforce development, community resilience, and more.
