The Center for Great Lakes Literacy (CGLL) has launched a new online module in its series of Great Lakes Literacy educational explorations (GLLees) featuring harmful algal blooms (HABs). This self-paced module is ideal for educators of learners in grades 3-12 and provides an overview of HABs, related activities, online resources, and stewardship ideas. Additionally, it promotes an understanding of the effects HABs have on the Great Lakes.
Visit the HABs GLLee page to learn more or register for the module.
GLLee modules offer an introductory collection of Great Lakes-focused topics and resources to better equip educators to explore Great Lakes Literacy and learning with youth. These quick, free modules can be accessed online anytime via Google Classroom. Current topics include aquatic invasive species, freshwater mussels, coastal erosion, vernal pools, and more. New GLLees are released periodically on the CGLL website.
The modules include career spotlights with scientists and topic experts, as well as classroom resources curated to foster topic exploration, stewardship, and hands-on learning opportunities with youth. Participants can also connect with other educators in a virtual community of practice. After completing a GLLee, educators receive a certificate for three contact hours of study and a digital notebook with all the module’s resources.
The Center for Great Lakes Literacy is a collaborative effort led by Sea Grant educators throughout the Great Lakes watershed. CGLL fosters a community of Great Lakes and freshwater stewards by engaging, inspiring and supporting educators, scientists, and youth. Learn more at www.cgll.org.
