Nutrient runoff, including from fish farms, contributes to the growth of harmful algal blooms. While aquaculture is an economic opportunity for Great Lakes states, nutrient pollution from fish waste could exacerbate this issue.
Researchers Dr. Silvia Newell and Dr. Kevin Neves developed and analyzed a recirculating aquaculture system for perch production that uses nitrogen waste from fish ponds to support production of prawns and tomatoes.
Ohio Sea Grant will host a webinar on December 14, 2023 at 12:00pm-12:30pm to explore this avenue of research.
