Research
We invest in research to develop science-based solutions to Michigan’s environmental challenges. We support graduate fellows and undergraduate interns as they work with nonprofits, state and federal agencies, and decision makers to put Great Lakes research and stewardship into practice.

Our work is a smart investment in Michigan
- We turned $19 million of federal and state funding into nearly $86 million in direct economic benefits for Michigan in 2018-23. For every $1 in core funding we receive, we generate $4 in value for Michigan.
- In 2018-2023, we invested $3.5 million in 21 research projects that are addressing harmful algal blooms, boosting economic development in coastal communities, and more.
- We also supported 53 undergraduate interns and 20 graduate fellows, shaping Michigan’s next generation of scientists and stewards.
